EnglandENGLAND 37 - 18 AUSTRALIAAustralia

Twickenham Stadium - Saturday 24 November 2018
KO: 15:00 HT: 13-13 Att: 81,275

HOW IT HAPPENED MINUTE BY MINUTE…

England v Wallabies Well, Twickenham is grey and miserable today, and damn it's cold...must be Autumn!
England v Wallabies The good thing about matches like this is there's no faffing and we can just get on with it after the anthems... England fans in fine voice with the National Anthem!

England 0-0 Wallabies Owen Farrell, today's captain awaits the signal from Ref Peyper to kick off....
England 0-0 Wallabies 0m And we do, as the Wallabies are sporting their magnificent indigenous jerseys today, while England are wearing Rainbow Laces
England 0-0 Wallabies 2m Ben Youngs charges down a kick to clear the homeside out of the Aussie 22 and it's an England 5m attacking scrum…
England 5-0 Wallabies 3m Delightful work from Youngs as he collects the ball from the back of the scrum and clears off to Jonny May who flies over in the corner unhindered to score
England 7-0 Wallabies 4m Faz does an excellent job of the conversion from an acute position
England 7-3 Wallabies 6m But as quickly as England get on the board, Maro Itoje concedes a penalty following the restart and 10 Matt To’omua pings over three points for the visitors with ease, almost in front of the posts outside the 22
England 7-3 Wallabies 8m England waste no time from their restart, setting up an attacking lineout outside the Aussie 22 on the nearside, and they breach the 22 before they are turned over and the visitors force them back out
England 7-3 Wallabies 9m Joe Cokanasiga makes a fine break along touch and is shut down at the 22, but the ball is away before the Aussies turnover the ball deftly
England 7-3 Wallabies 10m The visitors have the England side pinned back in their own half, but a poor kick is pounced on by white hands and before you know it, England are back up at the Aussie 22 with a penalty
England 7-3 Wallabies 12m Faz tees up from out wide, just outside the 22 and once silence falls, he almost nails the penalty kick...but it pings off the nearside upright
England 10-3 Wallabies 14m However, he has another chance almost immediately as the Aussies are offside at the ruck, and this time, from closer to the centre, Faz does nail it
England 10-3 Wallabies 15m England force the visitors out of their half as quickly as they enter it, and they have to make up ground, aided by a knock on from Elliot Daly...
England 10-3 Wallabies 16m But England are here to play and prove a point, pushing the Aussies back up to the 10m and winning a penalty to set up a 10m attacking lineout
England 10-3 Wallabies 17m The lineout is just about won, but England are forced in-field and are turned over still on the Aussie 10m, before a kicking game ensues...
England 10-3 Wallabies 18m The homeside come out winners at the ruck and have an attacking scrum, near touch, just inside the Aussie 10m
England 10-3 Wallabies 19m England hands are quick today, offloading much more efficient, until they are again turned over!
England 10-3 Wallabies 20m A solid defensive scrum from Australia, the clearance kick directly into the hands of Daly but he is bundled into touch by Izzy Folau
England 10-3 Wallabies 21m Play is halted as the water boys charge on with messages from coaches before England have a defensive scrum just inside their own half
England 10-3 Wallabies 22m The scrum collapses and needs to be reset...the crowd are restless as there is little but chatter - which is very loud when there's 82,000 people at it!
England 10-3 Wallabies 23m England win the scrum penalty and Daly is teeing up from his side of halfway, c.52m out from the uprights...
England 10-3 Wallabies 24m ...but it falls well short and the score stands
England 10-3 Wallabies 25m A good break comes from Will Genia and he offloads to Bernard Foley in the centre today who kicks ahead before he is taken down
England 10-8 Wallabies 27m The Aussies regroup and brush aside all the England defence for Dane Haylett-Petty to fly over with an easy try
England 10-3 Wallabies 27m To’omua heads to tee up the conversion, but the TMO gets involved, the big screens shout TRY and To’omua goes to kick his conversion, but the decision is reversed for a forward pass in the run up
England 10-3 Wallabies 29m Crowd are pleased at the result as they previously booed the decision as the replays were shown before 'TRY' popped up
England 10-3 Wallabies 31m Play resumes in the midfield, and Izack Rodda tip tackles Daly well over the horizontal, for which Ref Peyper awards a penalty. That was clearly a yellow card offence, no matter how sorry Rodda looked
England 13-3 Wallabies 33m Faz tees up and increases the score to 13 - a neat 10-point lead...
England 13-8 Wallabies 35m From the restart, England look complacent and the Aussies take full advantage, despite being tackled at every other step, Youngs missing a vital tackle on Folau as he runs in to score under the posts, making it look too easy
England 13-10 Wallabies 36m The conversion is simple for To’omua and suddenly a two score lead is reduced to just three points
England 13-10 Wallabies 38m England look a tad out of sorts suddenly, as another penalty gives Australia possession on the England 10m...time off...
England 13-10 Wallabies 39m Aussie attacking scrum has to be reset - far too much faffing occurring here...
England 13-10 Wallabies 40m Finally we have a scrum and the Aussies charge towards the England 22, breaching at and close in on the whitewash;  it’s Rodda who gets closest before he is whacked out of contention by Faz. Ball is quickly recycled and goes out wide from in front of the posts, and Ref Peyper is playing advantage and whistle goes as England are caught offside before the turnover, and it's a penalty in front of the posts for the visitors
England 13-13 Wallabies 40+1m Cheika is having a hernia up in the coach box as the TMO has a look or three at Faz’s tackle into Rodda. Aussies are unhappy that Faz shoulder-charged Rodda, but it was clear in the replay it was 6 of one and half a dozen of the other; penalty to the visitors
England 13-13 Wallabies 40+2m After what feels like infinite chat from the Aussies, To’omua kicks over the penalty to equalise at half time, Michael Cheika obviously thrilled while Eddie Jones likely not so, his side squandering a 10-point lead in 7 minutes

England 13-13 Wallabies HT T: May C: Farrell P: Farrell (2) | T: Folau C: To’omua P: To’omua (2)

England v Australia HT AIs 2018

England 13-13 Wallabies 40m We're back at Twickenham where Sefa Naivalu has replaced Jack Maddocks for the Aussies
England 13-13 Wallabies 41m And the first thing Ref Peyper has to do is sort out the children as they all draw their handbags on the far side in the midfield, Kyle Sinckler and Itoje at the centre of it
England 13-13 Wallabies 42m Another impressive charge down of an Aussie clearance kick has England on the front foot again...
England 18-13 Wallabies 43m ...and Daly collects a difficult offload and belts it all the way to the whitewash, outrunning almost every Aussie and leaving them in his wake
England 20-13 Wallabies 44m Faz adds the extras and England are looking back on track again - these HT talks must be quite something!
England 20-13 Wallabies 46m Unsurprisingly, the tackles are getting bigger as they get into it in the midfield, while Sekope Kepu thinks he's in with a try after breaking free and charging to the whitewash; the whistle went an age before
England 20-13 Wallabies 47m Much to Kepu's annoyance, the penalty goes to England & they clear for an attacking lineout, making it to the Aussie 22 before Itoje knocks the ball forward
England 20-13 Wallabies 48m Tatafu Polota-Nau replaces Tolu Latu in the front row before play resumes
England 20-13 Wallabies 50m Play shifts to the midfield as the skies fall dark over Twickenham and a kick goes too far for the Aussies to have a lineout on halfway
England 20-13 Wallabies 51m A little aerial football ensues, but the Hussies choose to run it from their 22; when they go backwards, another high ball comes and England win a penalty on the Aussie 10m
England 20-13 Wallabies 52m Time off as Ben Moon gets attention on the pitch; the crowd are restless...
England 20-13 Wallabies 53m England attacking scrum...and it collapses; Peyper has a word with the front rows before the reset
England 20-13 Wallabies 54m The crowd breaks into a rendition of Swing Low - probably from boredom, but once the scrum gets going, it's a swift move to the Aussie 22, England are pushed from the nearside to the far side before Sam Underhill breaches the 22
England 25-13 Wallabies 55m Mark Wilson carries the ball with such verve before he is shut down, the ball is recycled and gets to Cokanasiga - second cap and a second try. Mightily impressive work from the new boy!
England 27-13 Wallabies 57m Faz adds the conversion and England fans are truly getting behind the team as they start to put some real daylight between the scores
England 27-13 Wallabies 58m Richard Wigglesworth comes on for Ben Youngs while Allan Alaalatoa & Ned Hanigan replace Kepu and Pete Samu
England 27-13 Wallabies 59m Meanwhile, Cokanasiga is hungry for more and catches the high ball on halfway, evades 4 tackles en route to the tryline and is caught just short by Michael Hooper - no try but jeez he's good!
England 27-13 Wallabies 61m England are still in possession, and after the next phase has the ball held up, it's an England 5m attacking scrum...
England 27-13 Wallabies 62m The cry of 'Heave!' is deafening from the stands, but the ball has to be played, goes wide to the nearside as advantage is being played - Genia pinged and back for the penalty
England 30-13 Wallabies 63m Faz tees up on the far side inside the 22 and increases the score by three more...
England 30-13 Wallabies 64m Harry Williams replaces Kyle Sinckler in the front row while the visitors finally breach the England 22 after a very long while...
England 30-13 Wallabies 66m As England are busy defending, the crowd roars as a pale and pasty white chap invades the pitch with nothing on but his ugly pants and has to be caught and evicted.
England 30-13 Wallabies 67m With the unattractive man - not an athlete - off the pitch - it's a 5m attacking lineout for Australia
England 30-13 Wallabies 68m The ball comes from the far side to the nearside and Naivalu almost takes it over the corner but Dale takes him down hard and into touch, the ball still in play...
England 30-13 Wallabies 68m ...Henry Slade kicks it ahead from almost his own tryline, May chases it hard, Ben Te'o(?) kicks it further ahead and May grounds it for a magnificent try!
England 30-13 Wallabies 68m But the TMO checks the placing of the ball and it does just kiss touch back in the England half... sighs all round for England fans as it's no try. But what superb play
England 30-13 Wallabies 69m Naivalu is replaced by Marika Koroibete after that huge hit from Daly; Rob Simmons & Nick Phipps on for Adam Coleman and Genia
England 30-13 Wallabies 70m Manu Tuilagi returns to the field in an England shirt after two years, replacing Slade while Alec Hepburn is on for Moon
England 30-13 Wallabies 72m Play is in the midfield while co-captain Dylan Hartley comes on for Jamie George... Previously, Jermaine Ainsley replaced Scott Sio
England 30-13 Wallabies 73m England are busy lurking in the Aussie 22 as the visitors try desperately to force them out...eventually they do, but not for long
England 30-13 Wallabies 74m George Ford & Nathan Hughes come on for Underhill and Te'o while England attack back into the 22 again...
England 35-13 Wallabies 75m ... and this time it's co-captain Faz who runs in a fourth try for England with a touch of flair
England 35-13 Wallabies 76m Faz converts his try while Charlie Ewels replaces Courtney Lawes
England 35-13 Wallabies 77m The visitors head towards the England 22 from the restart, and they make some serious headway, but...
England 35-13 Wallabies 77m ...missed the cause but handbags really are drawn this time, multiple Aussies dragging Tuilagi to his knees, and Itoje not having any of it, taking on 3-4 of the opposition on his own
England 37-18 Wallabies 79m Play finally resumes and the Aussies aren't taking this drubbing lightly, setting up Folau for a brace in the corner
England 37-18 Wallabies 80+1m The conversion is duff, and England have a solid win on the books again, though it was pretty hairy for periods in the first half!

IrelandIRELAND 57 - 14 USAUSA

Aviva Stadium, Dublin - Saturday 24 November 2018
KO: 18:30 HT: 24-14 Att: 51,000

ON a chilly night at Aviva Stadium, the USA Men's Eagles were handed their first loss of 2018 at the hands of a skilful Irish side. In their final contest of the November Internationals 2018, the United States men were unable to overcome the powerful set piece pressure and sharp offensive attack that led Ireland to a 14-57 victory.

The conclusion to a season that surpassed all expectations - with the Eagles making history in every international test window - the loss still does not hinder the most successful season of all time for the United States men.

"Pretty disappointed in the scoreline, not necessarily in that we did not win the game against a really good Irish team. I just think that some of the stuff we've been really good at this year - which is exerting the pressure and playing in the right areas of the field - when we did that well, we were reasonably in the game. And when we didn’t do that well, we spilled possession," said Head Coach Gary Gold.

"An event like this is a huge occasion for many of our young guys and so we'll learn from that. But, we can only play who we've got in front of us and from our point of view we're very grateful that we asked on to get these kinds of games and play against quality opposition like this and I think it'll only do us a huge amount of good."

Ireland was first on the board when an opening on the right flank allowed Andrew Conway to run down the middle, break a tackle and dot down for the first of his hat-trick, Joe Carbery converting to take the score to 7-0. Called for not rolling away several minutes later, the Irish gave USA an opportunity to kick for points but the ball went wide.

The Eagles finally claimed points of their own when a perfect lineout throw by Joe Taufete'e allowed him to reclaim the ball and crush his way through the opposition to make it, 7-7.

With the scoreline even and plenty of time to play, the Irish were quick to answer back. On a wide break on the left side, Ireland overcame an Eagles’ tackle and kept their attack flowing on the right edge to punch the ball in through Conway, claiming a brace in the first quarter, 7-14.

Ireland v USA Andrew Conway AIs 2018

Punished by a penalty on a driving maul, the Irish next gave up a penalty try to the Eagles to even the score again. But an offside call on USA allowed Carbery to go for posts and the home team had once again reclaimed the lead, 17-14.

The Irish notched one more just before halftime with their No. 8, Jack Conan, finding space down the middle to runaway with a 24-14 lead.

Despite a few critical moments, the Eagles had capped off a good first half of play. With an opportunity to build on moments of strength in the first half, the visitors still had every chance of walking away with another victory.

When play resumed, however, the tables had quickly turned as a hard knock to Joe Taufete'e forced him to be carted off the pitch.

The Irish were vigilant through the remainder of the game, using unmatched pressure to force three consecutive scrum penalties and nail another try.

An error-ridden second half stopped a multitude of opportunities for the United States, paving the way for Ireland to drive in another four unanswered tries through Tadgh Beirne, Stuart McCloskey, Quinn Roux and Conway. The scoreline could have been increased once more, less a forward pass on a breakaway, chip-kick score that was called back by the TMO.

With the Irish up 50-14 and one final play to go, the Eagles defence put up a final fight but could not contain one last Ireland converted try through John Ryan, taking the final hammering to 57-14.

Though the United States men did not conclude their 2018 year in the way they had hoped, the loss does little to erase the heroic victories that captured the season.

Opening the year by claiming their second consecutive Americas Rugby Championship title - the only team to have done so by winning all five matches - certainly charted an impressive course.
